International Women's Day 2019

We asked some of the lovely ladies in Cara some questions for International Women's Day 💖

Siobhan

1.Where is your favorite place you've ever visited with your female friends, and what made it so special?

Rome. I travelled to Rome with my mum for my 21st birthday and it was breathtaking. The architecture, the history, the people and of course the food (pizza and pasta YUM!) was amazing. It was incredible to spend my 21st birthday touring the Colleseum while enjoying some Nutella Gelato.

2.Who is your favorite international female author?

JK Rowling is my favorite female author. JK Rowling is best known for writing the Harry Potter series. I eagerly sat by the front door on my 11th birthday to hopefully receive my Hogwarts acceptance letter.  JK Rowling's imagination has created an exciting world for readers to escape to and that "happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light".

3.What's your favorite international dish? Eg Lasagne (Italian) Fajitas (Mexican) etc.

My favourite dish has to be Pizza. If I could eat pizza everyday, I would! Controversial statement, but I don't like pineapple on pizza. I prefer a simple margherita pizza.

4.What is your favorite film where a female has is the star of the show?

My favourite film is Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot. I went to the cinema to see it twice and I own it on Blu-Ray, I usually watch this movie when I need an instant 'pick me up'. Before becoming Wonder Woman, Diana was Princess of the Amazons who was trained to become a strong warrior. Throughout the movie, you watch Diana discover her full powers and fulfill her true destiny. It's an empowering movie that reminds us how strong and fierce women are.

5. What do you think of the word ‘feminism’ and what does it mean to you?

It's living in a world where women don't feel suppressed, instead they feel empowered, strong and independent. Behind every successful woman is a tribe of successful women who have her back.

7. Being a female, we are so hard on ourselves. We tend to see the negatives rather than the positives. If you were to change anything about yourself, what would it be?

I think I need to take a spoonful of my own medicine (no pun intended, working in a pharmacy). I need to mirror the energy and positivity I spread to my girlfriends towards myself. I will be their number 1 cheerleader and I need to make sure that there's enough for myself at the end of the day too.

8. Which female inspires you on a day to day basis and why?

My mum is my inspiration every single day. She is Wonder Woman and I am so grateful to have her in my life. She works incredibly hard everyday and always puts others first. After a long day, I come home and she has my electric blanket on and my pyjamas laid out for me which puts a smile on my face. She is the first person I call when I have good news or if I need help with a problem. Mum, if you're reading this, I LOVE YOU.

9. Do you think women are kind to each other or are they more competitive and hence put each other down?

'Real queens fix each other's crowns'. I think women will always support each other and build each other up. I train at CrossFit Sligo and the women are incredibly supportive and motivating. They inspire me to work harder and are my number 1 cheerleaders every single day.

10. If we were to dance in the streets to celebrate International Women’s Day, what song would you choose for us to dance to?

Destiny's Child - Independent Women. It puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it.

11. Back to Pharmacy and Healthcare, what vitamins do you use on a daily basis that you feel have really worked.

Revive Zest Active is a new addition to my health and fitness regime. It helps with energy, mental performance, recovery from exercise and immune support. It contains no caffeine or stimulants. It tastes great too!

I also can't leave the house without lipbalm.

13. From female perspective, what is most important to you in your life?

Chasing your dreams is so important. Follow your passion and never give up on your goals. If there's something you have a passion for, dedicate time each week for you to work on this. Always believe that you are absolutely capable of achieving your goals too.

14. What product (skincare, make-up, tan, vitamin etc) would you take to a desert island if you were on your own?

Definitely Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF50+. I was gifted with ginger hair and an extremely fair complexion so the suncream is a necessity.

15. What is your ‘go to’ product (doesn’t have to be stocked in Cara) when you need that pick me up?

BPerfect Liquid tan in Medium. I feel much more confident when I apply a layer of tan and it's an immediate pick me up. It also smells amazing too and wears off beautifully. Doesn't stain the bed sheets or your clothes either so it's a win-win situation.

Kara

1.Where is your favorite place you've ever visited with your female friends, and what made it so special?

I have a few but I suppose top of the list would have to be Albufiera in the Algarve, we have a lot of memories of holidays and hen parties in the town so I suppose we enjoy the familiarity of it along with the fab local people.

2.Who is your favorite international female author?

Currently I would have to say Margaret Atwood, after the 2018 hype on the hit TV show 'The Handmaid's Tale' I got engrossed in her book which was written back in 1985 about Gilead which is ruled by a regime that treats women as property of the state. The few remaining fertile women are forced to give up their children to the state but are determined to fight for their rights and get their children back. I am just waiting on the release of the sequel 'The Testaments' which is due out later this year.

3.What's your favorite international dish? Eg Lasagne (Italian) Fajitas (Mexican) etc.

Definitely Mexican for me, I am known for hunting out the closest Mexican restaurant as soon as I visit any new town or city. Probably Quesadilla's would be my favourite dish!

4.What is your favorite film where a female has is the star of the show?

I am a bit old fashioned when it comes to my favourite film, it would have to be Pride & Prejudice and of course Elizabeth Bennet taking star of the show, I have lost count how many times I have watched it since I had to read the book for study back at school! Of course the modern uptake of the story in Bridget Jones is a close second option.

5. What do you think of the word ‘feminism’ and what does it mean to you?

I suppose it is women being heard and seen as an equal, just to be treated in the same in all walks of life!

6. In what areas, either in work or society do you feel women are treated differently from men? If you have a clear example, please put it forward.

Statistics worldwide show the pay gap between men and women is still an issue. But even still the perceptions of the professional world, I have often been introduced as an IT manager to meet a shocked expression due to assumption that they were expecting a male.

7. Being a female, we are so hard on ourselves. We tend to see the negatives rather than the positives. If you were to change anything about yourself, what would it be?

I have learned over the years to not be so hard on myself and not to measure myself up against the images or lifestyles we see on social media.

8. Which female inspires you on a day to day basis and why?

This has to be my mum, she takes what life throws at her (including grandkid babysitting duties with no notice!) in her stride and never complains, she has such a positive outlook on life.

9. Do you think women are kind to each other or are they more competitive and hence put each other down?

Definitely the latter, there is a lot of competitive ladies out there who chose to put people down rather than lifting each other up.

10. If we were to dance in the streets to celebrate International Women’s Day, what song would you choose for us to dance to?

Beyonce 'Run the World'

11. Back to Pharmacy and Healthcare, what vitamins do you use on a daily basis that you feel have really worked.

I am currently taking magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D which help me keep my work/life balance in check!

12, We all get ready in 5 minutes flat! :-) What are your key products required every morning to ensure you feel confident going to work?

For me it would definitely have to be the Benefit Ka-Brow and Benefit Roller Lash mascara, I would not leave the house without my brows and lashes on! A close third would be the SOSU Trio kit which is a handbag must!

13. From female perspective, what is most important to you in your life?

Most definitely to be happy, live life to the fullest and distance your self from negativity. Spend as much time as possible with family/friends and never take anything for granted!

14. What product (skincare, make-up, tan, vitamin etc) would you take to a desert island if you were on your own?

Ah this is a tough to pick only one.......but I would probably have to say a sun cream with a high SPF as I am getting older, I am slowly learning the importance of looking after my skin from the damage of UV rays, if I had of been asked this a few years ago I could have had a very different answer, in fact the complete opposite....a tanning oil

15. What is your ‘go to’ product (doesn’t have to be stocked in Cara) when you need that pick me up?

When I need a pick me up I definitely opt for a face mask, in the last year I have only used the Seoulista masks, the brightening one is my fav! It really leaves you with the same feeling as if you have just had a facial done in the salon.

7. Being a female, we are so hard on ourselves. We tend to see the negatives rather than the positives. If you were to change anything about yourself, what would it be?

6. In what areas, either in work or society do you feel women are treated differently from men? If you have a clear example, please put it forward.

5. What do you think of the word ‘feminism’ and what does it mean to you?

Feminism to me isn't about women trying to be better than men but just equal. I grew up in a family with 5 brothers and I was always equal. My brothers went to Karate, football and worked on the farm and so did I. Coming from a big family taught me a lot about equality.

6. In what areas, either in work or society do you feel women are treated differently from men? If you have a clear example, please put it forward.

I dont feel that women are treated that differently to men anymore, in fact I was struggling to find an answer to this actually. In the UK and Ireland things have moved on so much in the last 20 years. Unfortunately in less developed countries there still is a huge difference.

7. Being a female, we are so hard on ourselves. We tend to see the negatives rather than the positives. If you were to change anything about yourself, what would it be?

I would change loads of things, all the usual things that us women are not happy with. I want to be richer, I want to be thinner, I want to be smarter. Realistically these are all things I can change myself but you know I'm actually very happy as much as I complain. Ive a great family, a great boyfriend, a job I love, great work colleagues. If wealth was measured this way....I'm a millionaire!

8. Which female inspires you on a day to day basis and why?

My mum... Agnes Birney. Mum raised 6 of us and I really dont know how she done it. When mum was my age she had 5 children and kept our home running smoothly. Mum and Dad had a business which took up a lot of time and even with this we never missed any of our hobbies or activities and on a Sunday morning we where taken to mass dressed in our best.

9. Do you think women are kind to each other or are they more competitive and hence put each other down?

I think age and maturity has a lot to do with this. I love to see women be successful whether it b in their private life or business. I'm happy in my life and so I want to see others happy too. We have so many successful women in Ireland and I follow so many of them and I love hearing all their stories and I find them inspirational.

Lancome Teint idole foundation, Note bronzer, LMD pallet and Benefit precisely brow pencil in no 5 then im ready to take on the world.

13. From female perspective, what is most important to you in your life?

Health and the people im close to. The saying your health is your wealth is so true. I was sick for a few days before Christmas and I'm really not a good patient. My mum and boyfriend where the 2 people that I relied on for everything.

14. What product (skincare, make-up, tan, vitamin etc) would you take to a desert island if you were on your own?

Bioderma Sensibo Micellar water, I use this morning and night and I 100% have to say its my favorite skincare product.
Make up would be my Benefit precisely my brow. I was the 16 year old that knew more than my mum and as much as she told me not to I still plucked my eyebrows to within and inch of their lives.
Hopefully its a nice desert island somewhere warm so I wont need tan but I'd bring Aveeno after shower mist to use after my swims in the ocean.

1. Where is your favorite place you've ever visited with your female friends, and what made it so special?

J.K. Rowling

4. What is your favorite film where a female has is the star of the show?

Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon

5. What do you think of the word ‘feminism’ and what does it mean to you?

Feminism is often misconstrued as women attempting to achieve more rights than men. Personally, I don't think this is the case and I believe that 'feminism' means maintaining equal rights to men and not having the appearance as the "weaker" gender.

6. In what areas, either in work or society do you feel women are treated differently from men? If you have a clear example, please put it forward.

In terms of pay, there is a substantial gap between what men are paid compared to women. For example, an article I've read recently stated that Mark Wahlberg, the world's current top paid male actor, is paid $68 million a year compared to Emma Stone, the world's current top paid actress who is on $26 million a year.

7. Being a female, we are so hard on ourselves. We tend to see the negatives rather than the positives. If you were to change anything about yourself, what would it be?

To stop sweating the small things and over-analyzing and over-thinking situations when there is no need for it.

8. Which female inspires you on a day to day basis and why?
